The wet variety takes a totally different route of development and causes blood vessels to grow in the affected areas. These new blood vessels are a response to the retina crying out for more oxygen and this causes new blood vessels to grow into the area. The new blood vessels leak very easily and can be reduced by injections into the eye of substances that shut down these blood vessels. Your Ophthalmologist can advise on the need for this treatment When the process is far gone then surgery to move the retina in a circular way so that the macula is placed over an area of better blood supply can help. This also proves that the underlying problem with degeneration is decrease of blood supply and nutrients. |
