More detail:

We now know that the degenerative process is largely because of the accumulation, over a long period of time, of Free Radicals (FRs) - breakdown products from the use of oxygen by an organ for the production of energy in order to function properly - and the inadequate quenching, or neutralizing of those FRs, by appropriate antioxidants in the diet.

The eye has developed over the mellenia the ability to absorb some of the radiation that it uses to see with. Radiation is probably the most harmful insult to any living structure, but the eye has to use that radiation to see, and has means to minimize the harmful effects of the radiation, but some of it gets through to cause a build up of damage over a period of time.

That ‘period of time’ has been found to be getting shorter and shorter - ie we are seeing Macular Degeneration in younger and younger people now.

The reason for this seems to lie in the poorer diet we have in the Western World!

We are generally better fed but less well nourished by our western diet
